Johnathan Jena
Professional drummer, instructor and composer, I have been playing for over 13 years and currently perform with Lowell-based rock band Waking Gray and as a solo artist in the Greater Boston area.
About Me
"A little about my past, my present, and my aspirations for the future."

As a percussionist for over 13 years, I have studied virtually every genre of music with fluency in rock, jazz, latin, funk and more.  Ever since I began learning how to play the drums around the age of 9, I have actively sought to push the boundaries of what I thought could be done before and use music as a medium to bring out the best in myself and others.  I have professional experience in teaching, performing as a soloist and in ensembles/bands, as well as composing and arranging.

Playing experience:

I have performed in many bands at places such as Symphony Hall in Boston, The Hard Rock Cafe in Cancun, Mexico, the Middle East in Cambridge, and Mechanics Hall in Worcester.  I have performed with the New England Conservatory Percussion Ensemble, New England Conservatory Repertory Orchestra, and was the asscociate director of the Fitchburg State University Percussion Ensemble.
I have studied under Kevin Tellier, Jeff Fischer, Lou Lacava and currently am the lead percussionist in the Townsend Military Band, where I played under the direction of the late Jon Nicholeson, the founder of MICCA (Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductor's Association).
As a solo artist, I am a two-time semi-finalist in the Guitar Center Drum-Off, the world's largest drum competition.  Contestants from all over the country compete, and I have been for the past two years (2014 and 2015), one of 30 in the U.S. to advance to the Semi-Finals among some of the most skilled and creative players of this time.  I also came in 1st place at the 2016 New Hampshire Drum Festival.  I also perform with my band. Waking Gray, who have been featured on 107.3 WAAF, New England's largest rock station.

I am proudly endorsed by Vic Firth Drumsticks as a drum set artist and a member of their Education Team and am also a member of the D'addario Education Collective and the Sabian Education Network.
Teaching experience:

As a percussion instructor, I have tutored well over 40 students over the years who come from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels.  I teach out of my home studio, locally, as well as online over Skype through a direct-input audio interface to make communication between the students and I seamless from anywhere in the world. I also currently teach at Acton Music in Acton, Massachusetts as well as at Monument Hill Community Music School in Leominster, Massachusetts.
In addition to this:

I am working on a drum book complete with exercises, etudes, and solos for snare drum and drum set which will include audio files and video files for each concept demonstrated. I am anticipated to be finished writing it within the next year (December of 2016).  I am also anticipating the release of "Sequences for Solo Snare Drum", a concert snare drum solo which is currently being considered for professional publication on Tapspace.
